Heading C2C. 6-hydroxy-1,10-decanedioic acid-1,6-lactone, having the formula is prepared by treating 1,6-oxido-cyclodec-1-ene, having the formula with ozone, and thermally oxidizing the ozonized material at an elevated temperature. The ozonization is preferably carried out in the presence of a solvent consisting of an aliphatic alcohol or a monocarboxylic acid having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
