Preparations for application to the scalp, to treat or prevent 'baldness, comprise 0.3 to 2% by weight of testosterone dissolved, emulsified or dispersed in a cosmetically acceptable carrier consisting of a major proportion of one or more organic materials and a .minor proportion of 'water. Suitable organic materials are ethanol; polyethyleneglycol waxes, cetyl or isopropyl alcohol, or lanolin.
