USPTO Abstract

1,162,684. Delivering measured quantities of liquids. AEROSOL INVENTIONS & DEVELOPMENT S.A. 3 Sept., 1966, No. 39488/66. Heading B8N. [Also in Division F1] An actuating button for the discharge valve of a pressurized aerosol dispensing container is adjustable so as to discharge a metered quantity or to discharge continuously. The button comprises a body portion 10 mounted on the discharge valve stem 22, and having a passage 34 acting as the metering chamber, and a discharge passage 38 controlled by a spring-loaded resilient shell member 12. In the metering position of shell member 12 shown, downward movement of member 12 by finger pressure moves a discharge port 48 out of register with passage 38 and then opens the discharge valve to fill passage 34. When the button is released, the discharge valve closes and port 48 registers with passage 38 for discharge of the contents of passage 34. For continuous discharge, member 12 is rotated to align a discharge port 58 with an indicator 40, so that, when member 12 is depressed, port 58 registers with passage 38 and the discharge valve opens. A cutaway 60 in member 12 aligns with indicator 40 to permit sufficient downward movement of member 12 in the continuous-discharge position. Indicator 40 has an arrow indicating the direction of discharge (Fig. 4, not shown). Vertical ribs on the body member 10 engage grooves in member 12 in the metering and continuous discharge positions of member 12. Indicator 40 and the ribs on member 12 serve for holding members 10 and 12 when rotating member 12. In the embodiment of Figs. 9 to 11 (not shown), a part (75) of the resilient side wall of member 12 is biased against member 10 to seal discharge passage 38 when member 12 is in its metering position and the button is depressed to fill the metering chamber, a spring member (80), (78) transmitting finger pressure to part (75). In the embodiment of Figs. 12 and 13 (not shown), sealing of passage 38 during filling of the metering chamber is effected by an inclined portion (92) of member 12 acting on an inclined portion (88) of member 10.
