A drug vehicle comprises an elongate gelatinous flexible strip having a cross-section such that a length thereof can be conveniently inserted into the buccal sulcus so as to adhere to the gum thereat and being marked or otherwise formed at intervals to facilitate it being divided up to provide individual lengths or sections of desired drug content or dosage. The vehicle contains a drug which is effective when absorbed through the buccal mucous membrane. The gellatinous strip may have a glyco-gelatine, alginate, or resin base. Specified drugs include hormones e.g. testosterone, oestrogens, progesterones, vasopressin and insulin; local anaesthetics e.g. lignocaine hydrochloride and diperodon hydrochloride; sympathomimetic amines e.g. adrenaline, novadrenalin, isoprenaline and amphetamine; ergotamine; analgesics e.g. morphine; cardiovascular agents e.g. glyceryl trinitrate; vaso-dilators, diuretics; oxytocin, digitalin, barbiturates, muscle relaxants, ganglion blocking agents; substances acting on are parasympathetic systems e.g. acetylcholine, anticholinesterases, physostigmine; antihistamines e.g. promethazine, alkaloids and glycosides e.g. atropine and hyoscine; nitrates e.g. amyl nitrate; analeptics e.g. caffeine; cytotoxic agents; anticoagulants e.g. heparin; vitamins e.g. cyanocobalamin, and trace element substances. Metabolic reactants for clinical investgisations e.g. p-amino hippuric acid may also be incorporated in the vehicle. Plasticisers, preservatives e.g. #- naphthol and diluents may be added to the vehicle. The drug vehicle may be made in strip form by moulding or extrusion, and may be provided with a coating, which is either saliva-soluble or is removed prior to insertion of the vehicle in the buccal cavity. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,061,557 and 1,083,896.
