A sheet of plastic adhesive material for use as a medical dressing is made from a composition prepared from polyisobutylene with or without mineral oil or petrolatum, and polyvinyl alcohol or gum acacia and/or a mixture of gelatine, pectin and sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose with or without benzocaine, or tetracycline and amphotericin. In making the sheet the polyisobutylene component is heated, the other components are mixed therewith, the mixture is allowed to cool and the cooled mixture is passed through a roller mill and flattened in an hydraulic press.ALSO:A protective dressing, e.g. medicated dressing comprises a sheet of plastic adhesive material, the material being a blend of a water soluble or water swellable hydrocolloid and a water insoluble viscous elastic binder. The sheet may be provided with a backing film. The hydrocolloid may be polyvinyl alcohol, gum acacia, pectin, gelatin, carboxymethylcellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, polyethylene glycol or carboxy polymethylene or a mixture thereof. The binder may be natural rubber, silicone rubber, acrylonitrile rubber, polyurethane rubber, polyisobutylene or sucrose acetate butyrate. The backing film may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polymers and copolymers of vinylidene chloride or fluorocarbon, or condensation products of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. The medicaments specified are insulin, amphotericin, tetracycline benzocaine and triamcinolone acetonide.
