1,052,724. Saponifying marine oil. W. CHALMERS, and A. J. SHAW. April 13, 1965 [April. 27, 1964], No. 15781/65. Heading C5D. Marine animal oils are treated to separate the saponifiable and unsaponifiable matter therein by saponifying the oil or a methyl ester thereof in conventional manner, and then solvent extracting the product in the presence of an alkali metal salt of phosphoric acid. Oils treated include the liver oils from teleost fish, dogfish and ratfish; the solvent may be ethylene dichloride; and the salt, which may be formed in situ by addition of phosphoric acid, may be disodium hydrogen orthophosphate, sodium dihydrogen orthophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, or a corresponding potassium salt. The extract of unsaponifiable matter contains Vitamin A.
