Provided is a pharmaceutical composition for treating or preventing peripheral neuropathy, the pharmaceutical composition containing an alkalinizing agent. Administration of this pharmaceutical composition enables the treatment or prevention of peripheral neuropathy induced by some form of pathological change or disease or the like, and particularly diabetes. Also provided is an alkalinizing agent or a pharmaceutical composition containing an alkalinizing agent, which exhibits suppressed expression of peripheral neuropathy. Administration of this pharmaceutical composition enables suppression of expression of peripheral neuropathy.
