Physically and chemically stable liquid O/W and W/O emulsions of riluzole are disclosed, together with methods for the preparation thereof. Such emulsions contain riluzole or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or derivative thereof in amounts from about 0.1 % to about 20 % w/w, preferably from about 0.5% to about 5% w/w; such emulsions are devoided of the known local (mouth) anaesthetic effects of riluzole.
