USPTO Abstract
An ignition apparatus for a combustor (10) includes a broadband laser energy source (30) that emits laser energy into the combustor (10), the broadband laser energy having at least two fundamental wavelengths, to produce a plasma that ignites a combustible mixture therein. In one embodiment, laser energy in the ultraviolet and infrared regions are emitted into the combustor (10). Intensity and time characteristics for the laser energy including fluence, pulse duration, repetition rate, peak intensity and average intensity can also be controlled for one or more of the fundamental wavelengths to further enhance the ignition and combustion processes.
