A topical pharmaceutical composition useful in treating viral infections in mammals includes a therapeutically effective amount of an antiviral active agent, a pharmaceutically acceptable nonionic surfactant in quantity sufficient to enhance the antiviral activity of said composition, and optionally, pharmaceutically acceptable excipients in quantity sufficient to make weight. A method is disclosed for treating viral infections in mammals by topically applying the aforesaid pharmaceutical composition in quantity sufficient to cover the site of the infection and the areas adjacent. A method is also disclosed for making the aforesaid composition.
