There is disclosed a process for preparing 4-methylpyra­zoles represented by the formula (II): (wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group or a substituted or unsubstituted pyridyl group), which comprises reacting 2,3-dichloro-2-methyl­propanal with hydrazines represented by the formula (I): RNHNH₂      (I) (wherein R is the same as defined above).
