Aerosol delivery articles (10) employ an electrical resistance heating element (18) and an electrical power source (34) to provide an aerosol. The articles advantageously comprise a disposable portion (12) and a reusable controller (14). The disposable portion (12) normally includes a drug or flavor substance and an air permeable resistance heating element (18) having a surface area greater than 1 m²/g, which usually carries an aerosol forming substance. The reusable controller (14) normally includes a puff-actuated current actuation means (28), a time-based current regulating means (30) to control the temperature of the heating element (18), and a battery power supply (34).
