A narcotic analgesic composition particularly in oral dosage form is provided which provides excellent analgesia in a mammal while reducing or eliminating the respiratory depression and euphoria usually associated with narcotic analgesics. The composition comprises an analgesic effective amount of a narcotic analgesic or salt thereof and an analgesic effective amount of nalbuphine or a salt thereof. A method of producing analgesia in a mammal is also provided, this method comprises administering to a mammal parenterally or orally an analgesic effective amount of a narcotic analgesic or salt thereof and an analgesic effective amount of nalbuphine or a salt thereof. Administration of the narcotic analgesic and nalbuphine can be either sequentially or simultaneously.
