The present invention relates generally to compositions and methods of using the same. The present invention relates to a method of increasing the release of nitric oxide from an anhydrous alcohol topical gel comprising a diazeniumdiolate modified macromolecule and at least one alcohol, the method comprising contacting the anhydrous alcohol topical gel with a hydrogel having a pH in a range of about 4 to about 6 to provide a combined composition; and wherein the combined composition is for topical application to skin of a subject.
