USPTO Abstract

Needle-based medical injectors having a needle sheath and a sheath retainer are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, an apparatus includes a housing, a medicament container within the housing, a plunger, a needle, a needle sheath that covers the needle, and a sheath retainer. The plunger has a distal end configured to move within the medicament container between a first position and a second position in response to a first force. The needle is coupled to the medicament container, and a portion of the needle is configured to be disposed outside of the housing. The sheath retainer is configured to be disposed about at least a portion of the needle sheath, and includes a grip surface configured to receive a second force to move the sheath retainer in a distal direction relative to the housing. The sheath retainer includes an engagement mechanism configured to exert at least a portion of the second force against the needle sheath when the sheath retainer is moved in the distal direction. The sheath retainer includes a lock protrusion configured to engage the housing to resist movement of the sheath retainer in the distal direction.
