USPTO Abstract

07-21(490)A METHOD OF PREPARING CHIRAL B-AMINO ACIDS ABSTRACT The present invention is directed to asym-metric synthesis of .beta.-amino acids wherein Curtius rearrangement of 2(R)-mono-substituted succinates is effected and the incipient isocyanate is trapped with a primary or secondary alcohol. The resulting carbamate-protected .beta.-amino esters are then saponified to produce the corresponding carbamate-protected .beta.-amino acids which are deprotected to yield .beta.-amino acids which possess the same absolute configuration as naturally-occurring (L)-amino acids.
