ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Gamma-pyrones, particularly maltol (2-methyl-3-hydr-oxy-4H-pyran-4-one) and ethyl maltol (2-ethyl-3-hydroxy-4H-pyran-4-one) are prepared by hydrolyzing certain pyran inter-mediates prepared by reacting furfuryl alcohols, particularly 1(2-furyl)-1-ethanol, in aqueous solution with a halogen-con-taining oxidant. Novel 4-halo-dihydropyran intermediates and the preparation thereof are also disclosed.
