Mechanism of action
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D and then in the kidneys to the active metabolite 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol). Calcitriol binds to the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in target tissues, promoting intestinal calcium and phosphate absorption, bone mineralization, and immune cell differentiation. It also has pleiotropic effects on cell proliferation, differentiation, and immune regulation.
