Mechanism of action

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble secosteroid that acts as a hormone precursor. After hepatic hydroxylation to 25-hydroxyvitamin D and renal conversion to the active form 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, it binds to the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in target tissues to regulate calcium and phosphate absorption in the intestine, bone mineralization, and modulation of immune responses.
