Mechanism of action

Vitamin D (cholecalciferol or ergocalciferol) is converted in the liver and kidneys to its active form, calcitriol, which binds to the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in target tissues. This activates gene transcription pathways that promote intestinal calcium absorption, bone mineralization, immune regulation, and cellular proliferation control. Vitamin D deficiency impairs these processes, leading to metabolic bone disease and immune dysfunction.
