Mechanism of action

Nitroglycerin is a nitrate vasodilator that is bioconverted to nitric oxide (NO), a potent vasodilator. When applied topically, it penetrates the skin and causes relaxation of vascular smooth muscle in the underlying tissues, increasing blood flow and oxygen delivery. This mechanism is used therapeutically to relieve angina, improve wound healing, and reduce pain in conditions with compromised local circulation.
