Mechanism of action
Tamsulosin is a selective alpha-1A adrenergic antagonist that preferentially targets receptors in the lower urinary tract. By blocking these receptors, it reduces smooth muscle tone in the prostate and bladder neck, decreasing urethral resistance and improving urinary flow rate. This mechanism alleviates symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia without significantly affecting blood pressure.
