Mechanism of action
This leads to vasodilation and a decrease in cardiac workload, resulting in reduced myocardial oxygen demand. Nitroglycerine is a nitrate ester prodrug that is converted to nitric oxide in the body, which then activates guanylate cyclase and increases cyclic GMP levels, leading to smooth muscle relaxation.
