Mechanism of action

These drugs work by various mechanisms (such as calcium channel blockade, nitrate donation, or phosphodiesterase inhibition) to cause vasodilation—relaxation of the smooth muscle in blood vessel walls. This widening of blood vessels decreases peripheral vascular resistance and reduces blood pressure, improving blood flow to tissues and reducing cardiac workload.
