Mechanism of action
ORS works by leveraging the sodium-glucose cotransport mechanism in the small intestine, where glucose facilitates sodium absorption, which in turn drives water reabsorption osmotically. The formulation maintains physiologic electrolyte concentrations to restore intracellular and extracellular fluid balance without causing further fluid shifts. This simple, non-pharmacologic approach is the first-line treatment for mild to moderate dehydration across all age groups.
