Mechanism of action
This is a therapeutic approach rather than a single drug, typically combining opioids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), acetaminophen, and/or adjuvant analgesics (such as gabapentinoids or local anesthetics) to target pain through different pathways simultaneously. By using agents with complementary mechanisms—such as peripheral anti-inflammation, central pain modulation, and neuropathic pain relief—multimodal analgesia achieves superior pain control while potentially reducing the required dose of each individual agent and associated adverse effects.
