Mechanism of action
IV rehydration solutions typically contain water, sodium chloride, potassium, and sometimes glucose or other electrolytes. These solutions are administered intravenously to rapidly restore intravascular volume and correct electrolyte abnormalities caused by dehydration from various causes such as vomiting, diarrhea, or inadequate oral intake. This is a supportive care intervention rather than a disease-modifying therapy.
