Mechanism of action
Thoracic epidural block solutions typically contain local anesthetics (such as bupivacaine or ropivacaine) that are injected into the epidural space surrounding the spinal cord in the thoracic region. These agents reversibly block sodium channels in nerve fibers, preventing action potential propagation and resulting in loss of sensation and motor function in the distribution of blocked nerves. This technique is used for perioperative anesthesia and postoperative pain management.
