Mechanism of action
This is a sterile, isotonic solution of sodium chloride (0.9%) that mimics the osmotic pressure and electrolyte composition of blood plasma. It is used to restore intravascular volume, maintain cellular hydration, and correct electrolyte deficiencies in dehydrated or hypovolemic patients. The solution does not exert pharmacological effects but rather provides physiological support through osmotic and electrolytic mechanisms.
Approved indications
- Fluid and electrolyte replacement in dehydration
- Hypovolemia management
- Maintenance of electrolyte balance during surgery or critical illness
- Vehicle for intravenous drug administration
Common side effects
- Hypernatremia (with excessive or prolonged use)
- Fluid overload / pulmonary edema (in susceptible patients)
- Phlebitis at injection site
- Hyperchloremic acidosis (rare, with large volumes)
