Mechanism of action
Sodium Chloride 0.9% Irrigation, USP provides mechanical cleansing action for irrigation purposes. Sodium chloride dissociates in water to provide sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−) ions. Sodium is the principal cation of extracellular fluid and plays a large part in therapy of fluid and electrolyte disturbances, while chloride has an integral role in buffering action during oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in red blood cells. The distribution and excretion of sodium and chloride are largely controlled by the kidney, which maintains balance between intake and output. Water is an essential constituent of all body tissues and accounts for approximately 70% of total body weight, with water balance maintained by various regulatory mechanisms and sodium playing a major role in maintaining physiologic equilibrium.
