Mechanism of action

Stannous fluoride is a topical fluoride compound that works through two mechanisms: the fluoride ion enhances remineralization of early enamel lesions and increases enamel resistance to acid attack, while the stannous ion provides antimicrobial activity against cariogenic bacteria. This combination reduces the incidence of dental caries and gingivitis when used in toothpastes or rinses.
