Mechanism of action

Normal saline is an isotonic crystalloid solution containing 0.9% sodium chloride (154 mEq/L each of Na+ and Cl−), which matches the osmolarity of blood plasma (~308 mOsm/L). It is used for fluid replacement and electrolyte supplementation without causing cellular water shifts. The solution distributes primarily to the extracellular compartment and is used for hydration, maintenance of electrolyte balance, and as a vehicle for intravenous medications.
