Mechanism of action
Propofol is a lipophilic alkylphenol that potentiates GABA-A receptor function, leading to increased chloride ion influx and neuronal hyperpolarization. This results in rapid onset of unconsciousness and sedation. The saline vehicle serves as a sterile diluent for intravenous administration.
