Mechanism of action
Normal saline (0.9% NaCl) matches the osmolarity of blood plasma, allowing it to be administered intravenously or topically without causing cell lysis or crenation. It serves as a physiologic replacement fluid for lost body fluids, maintains intravascular volume, and preserves electrolyte balance. It is a fundamental supportive therapy rather than a drug with a specific pharmacologic mechanism.
