Mechanism of action
Paravertebral blocks work by injecting local anesthetic into the paravertebral space, which contains the spinal nerves as they exit the intervertebral foramina. This blocks sensory, motor, and sympathetic nerve transmission in the distribution of those nerves, providing anesthesia or analgesia to the chest wall, abdomen, or other regions depending on the level of injection. The technique is used for perioperative pain management and regional anesthesia during surgical procedures.
