Mechanism of action

Dinoprostone mimics the natural prostaglandin E2, activating EP receptors on uterine smooth muscle and cervical tissue. This increases intracellular calcium and promotes myometrial contractions while softening and dilating the cervix. It is used to induce labor or facilitate cervical ripening prior to labor induction.
