Mechanism of action

Propofol acts as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA-A receptors, increasing chloride ion influx and neuronal hyperpolarization, leading to sedation and unconsciousness. It has a rapid onset (within seconds) and short duration of action due to rapid redistribution and metabolism, making it ideal for induction and maintenance of anesthesia.
