Mechanism of action

Propofol acts as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA-A receptors, increasing the frequency and duration of chloride channel opening. This hyperpolarizes neuronal membranes and suppresses neuronal firing, producing rapid sedation and anesthesia. It is commonly used for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia and for sedation in critical care settings.
