Mechanism of action
Prilocaine works by reversibly inhibiting sodium influx through voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve fibers, which stabilizes the neuronal membrane and raises the threshold for electrical excitability. This prevents the generation and propagation of action potentials, resulting in local anesthesia in the area of administration. It is an amide-type local anesthetic with intermediate potency and duration of action.
