Mechanism of action
Prednisone acts as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, entering cells and binding to cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptors. This complex translocates to the nucleus where it modulates gene transcription, leading to decreased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, reduced immune cell proliferation and migration, and suppression of inflammatory responses. It is commonly used to manage autoimmune and inflammatory conditions across multiple organ systems.
