Mechanism of action
Povidone-iodine is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that releases iodine, which oxidizes and disrupts microbial cell membranes and proteins. When used as a lavage solution, it is applied directly to surgical sites or wounds to reduce bacterial, viral, and fungal contamination and support infection prevention during or after surgical procedures.
