Mechanism of action

Povidone-iodine is a complex of iodine and povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone) that releases iodine when applied topically or via irrigation. The iodine penetrates microbial cell membranes and oxidizes essential proteins and nucleic acids, killing bacteria, viruses, fungi, and some protozoa. It is commonly used as a surgical scrub and irrigation solution to reduce infection risk in wounds and operative fields.
