Mechanism of action

Povidone-iodine is a complex of iodine and povidone that releases free iodine, which penetrates microbial cell walls and denatures proteins, effectively killing bacteria, viruses, fungi, and some protozoa. The addition of alcohol enhances antimicrobial efficacy, accelerates drying, and improves skin penetration. This combination is commonly used for skin antisepsis and wound disinfection.
