Mechanism of action
Povidone iodine is a complex of iodine and povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone) that acts as a topical antiseptic. When applied to skin or mucous membranes, it releases free iodine that oxidizes and denatures essential proteins and nucleic acids in bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa, effectively killing a wide range of microorganisms. The povidone carrier provides sustained release of iodine and improves stability.
