Mechanism of action

Povidone-iodine is a complex of iodine with polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone) that acts as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent. The iodine component penetrates microbial cell walls and membranes, oxidizing proteins and nucleic acids, thereby inactivating bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. The povidone carrier provides sustained iodine release and improved stability.
