Mechanism of action
The drug works by exchanging sodium ions for potassium ions as it passes through the intestines, effectively trapping potassium in the resin matrix. This reduces serum potassium levels by preventing potassium reabsorption and promoting fecal elimination. It is used to treat hyperkalemia (elevated blood potassium levels).
Approved indications
- Hyperkalemia (elevated serum potassium)
