Mechanism of action
The polyethylene glycol polymer is poorly absorbed and creates an osmotic gradient that retains water in the intestinal tract. The electrolyte components (sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate) maintain electrolyte balance while the solution passes through the gastrointestinal tract without net absorption or secretion. This results in rapid, complete bowel cleansing without significant fluid or electrolyte depletion.
