Mechanism of action
Ciclesonide is a prodrug that is converted to its active metabolite in the airways, where it binds to glucocorticoid receptors and suppresses inflammatory gene expression. This reduces production of inflammatory mediators and recruitment of immune cells, thereby decreasing airway inflammation and improving airflow. The isotonic and hypotonic formulations differ in osmolarity to optimize delivery and tolerability.
