Piperacillin-tazobactam is a Beta-lactam antibiotic with beta-lactamase inhibitor Small molecule drug developed by University Hospital, Bordeaux. It is currently FDA-approved for Bacterial infections including pneumonia, intra-abdominal infections, and urinary tract infections, Febrile neutropenia in cancer patients, Polymicrobial infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing organisms. Also known as: Piperacillin 4 g-Tazobactam 0.5 g, piperacillin-tazobactam combination product, PIPER/TAZO, Piperacillin/Tazobactam.

Piperacillin-tazobactam is a beta-lactam antibiotic combined with a beta-lactamase inhibitor that kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis while protecting the antibiotic from enzymatic degradation.

Piperacillin-tazobactam is a combination medication that contains the antibiotic piperacillin and the β-lactamase inhibitor tazobactam, which has activity against many Gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is used to treat conditions such as Gram-negative Bacteremia, Osteomyelitis, Bone and Joint Infection, Appendicitis, and Perforated Appendicitis, typically administered as an intravenous or oral antibiotic.

Mechanism of action

Piperacillin is an extended-spectrum penicillin that binds to penicillin-binding proteins and disrupts bacterial cell wall cross-linking, leading to cell lysis and death. Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that irreversibly binds to and inactivates beta-lactamases produced by resistant bacteria, preventing degradation of piperacillin and restoring its activity against beta-lactamase-producing organisms.
