Mechanism of action
Methoxyflurane is a halogenated ether that acts as a general anesthetic at higher doses but at lower inhaled concentrations provides analgesia without loss of consciousness. It works by depressing the central nervous system and modulating pain perception, allowing patients to remain awake and cooperative during acute pain episodes. The drug is self-administered via a hand-held inhaler, making it suitable for emergency and acute pain management in pre-hospital and hospital settings.
